Vespa History

The History of Vespa

The Vespa ScooterVespas are convenient, compact and affordable and widely popular in the cities of Europe as well as other regions of the world including the United States, India, and Brazil. But how did this little transportation device become so popular and well-respected?

The History of Vespa dates back to 1945 in an Italy that was facing war and bombing. The economy of Italy during this time was dwindling and families were left jobless and money was going towards the Italian army and warfare. Mussolini was taking over the lives of Italians and the aircraft industry was highly restricted post World War II.

The Piaggio family was one of these war-struck families that had little hope for the future because their airplane company was experiencing devastations of war. In order to save their company from ruins, the two brothers Enrico and Armando Piaggio set out to invent a new type of transportation that would be affordable and efficient using what was left of airplane parts.

These airplane parts led to a unique design of the first Vespa in 1946 that ran on engines that were originally used as starter motors for propeller planes. The Vespa was created to be tough on the bumpy cobblestone roads yet able to travel quickly and with ease. Part of the reason was that Italy did not have an economy to redevelop its roads. The name Vespa actually means wasp in Italian and was inspired from the overall shape of the scooter.

The Piaggio Company aimed at building Vespas in large quantities through an industrialized assembly line fashion to provide a new way to travel for the masses. The first Vespas were showcased publicly at the 1946 Milan Fair where they sold fifty of them. Due to Audrey Hepburn’s Vespa riding scenes with Gregory Peck in “Roman Holiday,” the Piaggio Company saw sales shoot up to 100,000. Even clubs opened up for Vespa riders and fans. The History of Vespa reflects success in creating a demand that the Piaggio brothers did not see would come. Not only were they successful business owners, they also provided jobs for many Italians who were unemployed because of war.

The Vespa has established an alternative transportation mechanism deeply rooted in Italian culture. It evolved into more advanced design allowing both men and women to ride comfortably and being able to add accessories such as a child seat. The Vespa is a fun and reliable ride.

Despite its tremendous success, the Vespa experienced a drawback in sales due to competition during the early 1990s so it redesigned and refined itself into a newer model and sales increased. In 2003, the Vespa company almost came to bankruptcy because of the numerous changes in management. Robert Colaninno invested in the company and sought shares, which led to further success.

The Vespa has long been known to be a practical and utility vehicle that symbolizes the imagination of two individuals concerned for the public. As a result, the Vespa has been seen as a provider of freedom while travelling. It is also unique in design and a symbol of Italian artistic creativity, innovation and romance.

Scooter Riding

Scooter  Riding Is Green

Vespa Targa ScooterWith the rise in gas prices and lifestyle, many people are looking into investing in a motor scooter. Riding your motor scooter is a gas saving and eco-friendly option. Motor scooters are more affordable than cars and are an economic choice for people who do not have to make long commutes.

These days, there are many brands of motor scooters to choose from including Vespa, which is the most popular one. It is important to research various motor scooters to find the one that will best meet your needs. You have the option of riding your motor scooter for business, school or even pleasure. If your scooter will be the main transportation device for you, you would want to invest in one that is reliable and efficient. An older scooter might be a good option for those who want to ride for pleasure. You may also want to consider the area you live in incase you have to deal with hills and inclines. Ask yourself whether you will be riding your motor scooter by yourself or with a frequent passenger.

For saving money on gas, you have the option of buying a gas-powered scooter or an electric motor scooter. Gas powered motor scooters are more powerful, can travel at faster speeds and are more suitable for longer distances. Although the idea of a motor scooter is overall more eco-friendly, an electric one is the most environmentally conscious choice.

Along with buying the right motor scooter for yourself, you may also want to consider investing in riding gear. This should include a helmet, proper eyewear, jackets and gloves for the cold weather. The most important item you will need to have is a helmet, especially if the area you live in requires a helmet by law. A helmet not only protects your head in case you fall or get into an accident, but it also protects your head from getting hit by small particles in the air while riding. There are full face helmets that include the eyewear with it and open face ones that will require you to wear eye gear for more protection.

Eyewear blocks out any flying particles and debris in the air and protects you from harsh winds. Eye wear is also important for protecting your eyes from the sun. A riding jacket is also recommended for the cold weather but will protect your skin should you fall or get into an accident. Riding gloves are another option as they will help you grip your scooter.

Riding your motor scooter is an excellent way to save on money for gas and to avoid paying large car payments. There are so many available options to choose from in terms of brands, motor power and styles. Every rider has his or her own needs for a motor scooter, so it is important to find the right one to fit your lifestyle. Whether you will be riding on a daily basis for a work or school commute or you will be riding for pleasure for short distances, a motor scooter is an enjoyable and efficient transportation device.

Lambretta Supreme

History of the Lambretta Supreme

Scooters are a matter of craze for many people, especially the youth. But how many of us know the history and origin of this wonderful vehicle? Let us go through those interesting facts.

The first manufacturer of a motor scooter was Autoped Company of Nebraska in the United States. These small scooters came on to the roads in 1914. But the high cost of gas during the World War I had a negative effect on sales and after the availability of other modes of transport after the war saw the closing down of the factory. It was in 1922 Ferdinado Innocenti of Pesia, Italy moved to Rome and started manufacturing steel tubes and his tubes were well accepted throughout Europe. In 1931 he established a bigger facility in Milan to manufacture seamless tube and again the superior quality made this product well accepted in the market.

The Milan seamless tube factory was completely destroyed in the Second World War and the roads in Italy were in shambles. There was hardly any road in Italy that was left undamaged and transport became a problem for people. By that time Piaggio had just started production of his scooters. Innocenti thought this is the quick and economic answer to the transport problem of people of the war ravaged Italy. He started developing a completely new motor scooter. The development and testing of the prototype took one year and in 1947 commercial production started. Innocenti gave the name Lambretta to his new product as Lambretta is the name of a small river in Milan.

The production cost was low when compared to the motorcycle and the operating cost too was very low. A gallon of gas would see the scooter through more than 125 miles. The shield like formation in the front would keep the rider dry and the low platform gave several advantages over the motorbike and it is women friendly. Legs can be kept comfortably on the broad platform and protection from the dirt on the road is made possible. There is no fear of oil dirt from the chain transmission as the Lambretta uses an internal mesh transmission. The fuel cap is under the seat and the seat has a lock and no additional lock is required for the fuel cap in Lambretta.

The Lambretta Supreme model is marketed by the Supreme Motors of London. It is the restored version of the old Lambretta scooters. The Lambretta Supreme model has several modifications over the original SX200. Lambretta Supreme is offered in many color schemes. These color schemes are done exclusively by Supreme Motors. Lambretta Supreme has over 30 different colors to offer to its customers. Hence this Lambretta Supreme is not available anywhere else.

The economic upturn in Western Europe in the 60s led to the unpopularity of two wheelers. The mini cars took its place. Lambretta fell deep into financial trouble. The British Leyland Motor Corporation took over Lambretta. Lambretta made an effort to manufacture small cars with BMC engines and with the Innocenti brand name. The British Leyland Motor Corporation refused to update the models according to the times. The BLMC itself was plagued by industrial action by its labor force. Moreover, the sale of scooters nosedived in Europe. Eventually the Lambretta plant was sold to the Government of India in 1972. They too stopped production of two wheelers in 1998.

How to buy a Used Scooter

How to buy a Used Scooter

Vespa Scooter GirlUsed scooters are available in all scooter types including electric, motor and gas. These scooters are most often vehicles of inferior quality or defective ones. They may come with machine parts of poor quality. Scooters at much cheaper rates may have plastic rear drive gears instead of metal gears. They may not have any support from manufacturers or dealers to replace machine parts. The manufacturers do not even provide scooter related services to customers.

Used scooters may sometimes frustrate users with frequent breakdowns. These scooters are expensive to repair every now and then. At the same time, used scooters are dangerous, too. So, it is necessary to follow certain instructions for purchasing such scooters. First, the buyer must check whether the scooters were bought from reputable dealers. Secondly, they should be brand name scooters, and not off brand, no brand or clone models.

In addition, it is necessary to take scooters to a nearby scooter store for a complete service, if possible. This allows the buyer to know about the working condition and the machine parts. In most cases, customers need to buy only certain machine parts from scooter stores for their used scooters. This helps used scooters to remain in better working condition for some more time.

There are certain points to consider regarding the price. The primary thing is to know the original price for cheap scooters and the amount the dealer charges. This purely depends on the ability of customers. One way to obtain this information is to enquire about price details as a seller for the scooter. Secondly, you should know the amount paid by individuals for that particular model. This gives a clear picture about the amount to be paid for used scooters. Otherwise, it is likely that you will be cheated.

Used scooters are obtained at about half or even less price, compared to good and quality scooters. Quality 50cc scooters cost £1600 or more. The cost is below £1000 for cheap ones of the same kind. In addition, warranty options for used scooters are one or two months. But better quality scooters have at least one year warranty.
